A former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) known for causing friction among conservative counterparts believes Alberta voters require a new federal movement dedicated solely to Alberta’s interests. Drew Barnes, who stepped down as an MLA in 2023 after three terms representing Cypress as both a Wildrose and United Conservative member, has unveiled plans to establish the “Alberta Now” federal party. The party’s focus will be on advocating for provincial autonomy and championing conservative viewpoints in Alberta.
Barnes highlighted the need for a stronger Alberta voice in Ottawa, drawing parallels to the Bloc Quebecois and the early days of the Reform Party. He emphasized the importance of solely running candidates in Alberta to ensure a clear representation of the province’s interests on the federal stage.
Political science professor Duane Bratt from Mount Royal University in Calgary noted that the timing of this initiative aligns with discussions around a potential sovereignty referendum in Alberta. While acknowledging the potential opportunities, Bratt pointed out the challenges of launching a viable new party, citing past examples like the short-lived Maverick Party.
Barnes aims to register the party this fall and is currently engaging with potential candidates. He intends to contest any upcoming by-elections before the next general election. Despite facing skepticism from some observers, Barnes remains committed to representing Albertans’ interests and providing a distinctive voice in federal politics.
The initiative has sparked discussions about the impact on the Conservative Party, particularly in rural Alberta where the CPC has traditionally enjoyed strong support. While some express concerns about potential vote-splitting, Barnes maintains that the focus of “Alberta Now” is to concentrate solely on Alberta’s 37 seats without aiming to undermine the Conservatives.
