Conservative Member of Parliament Garnett Genuis has accused a student group at York University of infringing on free speech rights by refusing permission for him to host an event on campus. However, the university’s student center has stated that politics did not play a role in their decision-making process.
Genuis took to social media late Wednesday to express his disappointment over the cancellation of his event at the Toronto campus, attributing it to the student union’s decision. While he did not provide specific reasons for the cancellation, he labeled it as another instance of free speech being attacked.
The president of the York Federation of Students clarified on Thursday that her group lacked the authority to schedule or cancel events and had no prior knowledge of Genuis’s planned event. Genuis later confirmed that it was the York University Student Centre that rejected his event, citing the format as the reason.
Genuis has been visiting various university campuses to engage with students on topics such as youth unemployment and affordability. He aims to gather insights for parliamentary purposes as the Conservative party’s jobs critic and share details about the party’s youth jobs plan.
In videos shared on social media, Genuis can be seen interacting with students at a table adorned with a banner questioning generational differences. The events are coordinated with the assistance of campus Conservative groups.
The refusal by the student center at York University to allow a guest speaker at the table was a point of contention for Genuis, who emphasized the importance of open dialogue on campus issues. He noted that York was the only campus demanding a closed room for the event, which he deemed restrictive to the free exchange of ideas.
The executive director of the student center, Jason Goulart, explained that the event’s disapproval stemmed from booking policies and lack of detailed information, denying any political bias in the decision-making process. He invited the organizers to reapply for the event at any time.
While Genuis raised concerns about potential political motivations behind the event blockage, he also expressed a desire to engage with York University students in future interactions. The incident sparked significant online attention, with calls for legal action and defunding of the university from some individuals. York University reiterated its commitment to upholding lawful free expression and fostering respectful dialogue on campus.
