Parks Canada is currently conducting an investigation into a suspected poaching incident involving waterfowl at Point Pelee National Park. The incident is believed to have occurred between 8 p.m. on April 23 and 8 a.m. on April 24 in the marsh area of the park. Authorities are appealing for information from individuals who may have witnessed the illegal discharge of a firearm or noticed any suspicious individuals or vehicles in the area.

According to the government agency, poaching is a serious violation under the Canada National Parks Act. Officials are particularly interested in obtaining dashcam footage from various locations within the park, including the park entrance, marsh boardwalk, or Blue Heron day use areas, during the specified period.

A regular visitor to Point Pelee, Debra Parker, revealed that a nesting female swan was likely the target of the poaching incident based on photographs taken by a friend who observed a deceased swan and reported it to park authorities. Expressing her dismay, Parker emphasized the unsettling presence of a firearm within the park and voiced her hopes for the perpetrator to be apprehended.

Melissa Hargreaves, who frequents the park, recalled capturing images of the female swan a day before the incident. She described the swan as peacefully tending to her nest, exhibiting calm and relaxed behavior. Hargreaves condemned the poaching act as “awful” and expressed her desire for the responsible party to face the maximum penalty.

Larry Strung, a Wallaceburg resident and photography enthusiast, highlighted his surprise at the proximity of the swans’ nesting site to the boardwalk. He expressed his admiration for the swans’ grace and beauty, noting their lifelong bond and expressing concerns about the male swan’s fate following the harm inflicted on the female swan.

In response to inquiries, Parks Canada declined to specify the type of bird that was poached. The community at Point Pelee National Park, as well as visitors like Hargreaves and Strung, have been deeply affected by the distressing incident and are hopeful for a swift resolution to the investigation.
