Canadian athlete Damian Warner is currently holding the third position after completing five events in the Hypo Meeting decathlon in Götzis, Austria. With a total of 4,541 points, Warner showcased his skills in the 100m sprint, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400m race on Saturday at Mösle Stadium.
Starting off with the 100m sprint, Warner clocked the fastest time of 10.28 seconds among all participants. His compatriot Pierce LePage, ranked ninth overall with 4,285 points, finished fifth in the 100m with a time of 10.54 seconds.
In the long jump event, Warner secured second place with a jump of 7.73m. His shot put throw of 15.14m placed him in third position with a total of 2,818 points. Maintaining his third position, the 36-year-old from London, Ont., achieved a 2.00m clearance in the high jump and completed the 400m in 47.77 seconds. Warner is currently trailing behind the leader, Simon Ehammer of Switzerland, by 221 points.
LePage recorded a long jump of 7.29m, a shot put throw of 15.61m, a high jump of 1.97m, and finished the 400m in 49.61 seconds. In the overall standings, Germany’s Leo Neugebauer holds the second spot with 4,632 points, while Ehammer leads with an impressive 4,762 points after setting a new decathlon world record in the long jump with a mark of 8.51m.
Despite being an Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon in 2021 and an eight-time Hypo Meeting champion, Warner finished in sixth place in the current competition. LePage, hailing from Whitby, Ont., claimed the world champion title in 2023 and won the Hypo Meeting in the same year. The 30-year-old had to withdraw from the previous year’s event due to an injury sustained during the hurdles.
The Hypo Meeting is considered one of the largest multi-event competitions globally outside of the Olympics and world championships. The decathlon will conclude on Sunday with the remaining five events: 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1,500m race.
