Canadians are now able to officially apply to represent Canada at the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest as the application portal opens on August 31. Following CBC/Radio-Canada’s recent affiliation with the European Broadcasting Union, Canada has become eligible to participate in the prestigious talent showcase that has launched the careers of renowned acts such as ABBA, Céline Dion, and Maneskin.
Canada’s debut in the Eurovision Song Contest was announced on July 1, with over 130 million viewers tuning in last year from Europe and around the globe. Canadians ranked among the top three in the “rest of the world” category for voters outside of Europe.
The 71st Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to be held in Burgas, Bulgaria in May next year, and Canada is now in search of a representative. Artist submissions will be accepted from all regions of Canada starting August 31. The chosen Canadian performer should possess exceptional vocal talent, captivating stage presence, or unique artistry to represent the country on the global stage.
Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents aged 18 and above. The submission deadline is September 9, with further details on eligibility available on the CBC/Radio-Canada portal. Following the registration period, CBC/Radio-Canada will select a shortlist of musicians, with finalists announced later in the fall.
The ultimate decision on Canada’s representative will be made through a combination of public voting and input from a panel of music experts. The selected finalist will collaborate with industry professionals to create Canada’s official Eurovision song and performance.
Eurovision, which began in 1956 in Lugano, Switzerland, has grown to include numerous countries over the years. ABBA’s victory in 1974 with “Waterloo” and Céline Dion’s success in 1988 with “Ne partez pas sans moi” have solidified the contest’s reputation as a platform for launching successful music careers.
