Brandon’s mayor emphasized the importance of redundancy in Manitoba’s emergency service following an outage at the city’s 911 dispatch center that disrupted service for hours across most of the province on Wednesday. The outage, caused by a third-party fiber cable cut, affected all areas in Manitoba except Winnipeg. Despite the interruption, the 911 service was restored successfully later in the day.
The Brandon 911 emergency dispatch center, one of the primary centers in Manitoba, serves not only the city but also rural communities outside Winnipeg, providing critical support to police agencies and fire departments. The outage raised concerns among officials, with Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett and Steinbach Mayor Earl Funk calling for measures to prevent such disruptions in the future.
Fawcett highlighted the need for built-in redundancy in the system to maintain its integrity, while Funk stressed the importance of ensuring a backup system to safeguard rural communities’ access to emergency services. The outage prompted Brandon police to advise residents to use the local 10-digit police non-emergency line for assistance until the 911 service was fully restored.
Additionally, Manitoba’s Emergency Management Organization issued an emergency alert about the outage through various communication channels to keep residents informed. The incident underscored the critical role of the 911 system in ensuring the well-being of all Manitobans and the necessity of implementing safeguards to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
