Singer Bonnie Tyler has awakened from a coma but is still in critical condition in intensive care, according to an update on her official website. The raspy-voiced, Grammy-nominated pop icon, aged 75, underwent emergency intestinal surgery last month in Faro, Portugal, where she resides, and was subsequently put into a medically induced coma.
Although she is no longer in a coma, her recovery is gradual, with doctors expressing confidence in her eventual improvement but cautioning that it will require time, the statement released on Monday noted. Tyler’s performances scheduled up to August have been either canceled or rescheduled, but there is optimism that the autumn shows will proceed as planned.
Renowned for her 1980s hit ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which remains a popular choice for karaoke enthusiasts, Bonnie Tyler initially gained recognition with the 1978 track “It’s a Heartache” before solidifying her place in music history with the collaboration on “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” penned by Jim Steinman, the producer and songwriter known for his work with Meat Loaf.
