A man in Saanich, B.C., has been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for a significant case of voyeurism involving at least 652 women and girls. The man, Yin Yeung Derek Chan, secretly filmed numerous victims, uploading the footage to pornographic websites for his own gratification. The court heard that the impact on the victims is immeasurable, with the judge describing Chan’s actions as voyeurism on an industrial scale.
Chan was found to have filmed hundreds of women and children without their consent, capturing them in various locations such as gyms, streets, beaches, stores, and even their own homes across Greater Victoria. Most of the images were taken surreptitiously, including upskirt shots and videos filmed in changing rooms and private spaces.
Despite being identified prior to sentencing, only a fraction of Chan’s victims were known, with a significant number believed to be underage. The court revealed that Chan had a history of similar offenses, including theft and unauthorized recordings in private settings.
Police discovered thousands of pieces of women’s undergarments at Chan’s residence, along with incriminating footage and images. Chan was arrested multiple times for breaching bail conditions, indicating a pattern of non-compliance with legal requirements.
