Less than two months remain until the commencement of the Arctic Winter Games, sparking enthusiasm among participants and coordinators. However, tensions are escalating in the circumpolar realm due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s public contemplation of acquiring Greenland, even going as far as threatening military intervention for control.

Against this backdrop, Whitehorse is gearing up to host the 2026 Arctic Winter Games in March, a premier multisport event uniting athletes from various circumpolar regions, including Alaska and an estimated 200 athletes from Greenland. John Rodda, President of the Arctic Winter Games International Committee, affirmed the games will proceed despite the surrounding uncertainties.

Rodda, an American deeply engaged with the Games since 1974, emphasized his commitment to the event amid external disturbances. Notably, the Games have weathered political storms before, such as the suspension of the Russian delegation in 2022 post the Ukraine invasion, a suspension that remains in effect.

Looking ahead, preparations for the upcoming Whitehorse Games are forging ahead as planned. Claus Nielson, president of the Sports Confederation of Greenland, voiced unwavering support for the participation of Greenlandic athletes and coaches, underscoring their steadfast resolve to partake in the 2026 Arctic Winter Games.

Scheduled to commence on March 8, the forthcoming Games mark the fifth occasion Whitehorse hosts this prestigious event. While the city missed out on hosting the 2020 edition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the anticipation remains high for the upcoming celebration of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
