A woman facing charges in connection with the discovery of a deceased newborn in a wooded area in Halifax earlier this year has been granted bail. Ramandeep Kaur, aged 27, sought bail at Halifax provincial court with the support of a Punjabi interpreter, wearing a red sweatshirt labeled “perfectionist.” Judge Marc Chisholm approved her release under specific conditions, including residing at a Halifax address with her surety, remaining in Nova Scotia, weekly in-person check-ins with Halifax Regional Police, attending court as required, and surrendering her passport and Indian national identity card. A $1,000 promise to pay was mandated for both Kaur and her surety, with the Crown and Kaur’s lawyer, Trevor McGuigan, concurring on the conditions.
Kaur and her husband, Sukhpreet Singh, aged 24, are accused of disposing of the infant’s body to hide the fact of its birth, obstructing justice through deception, including lying to a police officer, and showing disrespect to a deceased body. On May 22, a 23-year-old woman, who had recently given birth, was admitted to the hospital in critical condition without her newborn. Following an extensive search, the infant’s remains were discovered near Old Coach Road in Goodwood, N.S., two days later. Subsequently, on May 27, the baby’s mother, a relative of Singh, passed away in the hospital. Authorities noted her condition upon admission seemed medically related rather than the result of violence. Halifax Regional Police anticipate waiting a few more months for the medical examiner’s office to provide findings on the cause of the infant’s death. While Kaur has been released on bail, Singh remains in custody. The couple is set to appear in Halifax provincial court on October 14.
