Russian drones carried out attacks on a passenger bus and a train in southern Ukraine, resulting in five fatalities, Ukrainian authorities reported. The strikes targeted transportation infrastructure as part of Moscow’s ongoing offensive.
A photograph shared by a regional governor on Telegram depicted a white vehicle with shattered windows and what appeared to be blood stains. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks as senseless acts of violence, calling for increased sanctions against Russia by the U.S. and Europe.
Recent months have seen escalating exchanges of strikes between Moscow and Ukraine on logistical and economic targets to disrupt each other’s military operations and undermine morale. Since the closure of Ukraine’s airspace following Russia’s invasion in 2022, buses and trains have become crucial modes of transport for civilians and businesses.
The drone assault on the bus near Nikopol resulted in the deaths of four men and a woman, with seven others sustaining injuries, according to local police and the governor of Dnipropetrovsk region. While both Ukraine and Russia deny deliberately targeting civilians, conflicts persist following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
In addition to the bus attack, a Russian drone targeted a passenger train in Ukraine’s Mykolaiv region, confirmed the acting regional governor. All 168 passengers and crew were safely evacuated, with no reported injuries. The train endured multiple strikes following the initial attack.
These incidents are part of a series of recent assaults on transportation infrastructure. Russia has intensified its strikes on Ukrainian railways, damaging numerous passenger wagons, locomotives, and railway stations this year. The state rail operator revealed that a total of 1,700 railway facilities have been targeted by Russian forces in 2026, illustrating a significant escalation compared to previous years.
Russian President Vladimir Putin linked participation in the upcoming parliamentary election to support for the war in Ukraine, urging Russians to vote. The election, the first since the launch of the war, is a critical indicator of public sentiment amid economic challenges and the exclusion of anti-war candidates from the ballot.
