In Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, a heartwarming incident unfolded during a day honoring the town’s compassion. A bus carrying American tourists came to the rescue when a vehicle carrying members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s military band broke down on their way to a 9/11 service at the Steele Community Centre.
Sgt. Maj. Dave Connolly recounted the band’s predicament at a local chicken restaurant, where their bus refused to start. Feeling the urgency to reach their destination, Connolly approached a tour bus driver for help, despite not being in uniform initially.
When Prime Tours owner Lisa Busch learned about the band’s situation and saw their instruments, she was reminded of the “Come From Away” story, a Broadway musical depicting Gander’s kindness during the 9/11 diversion. Without hesitation, Busch offered to transport the band to the community arena, ensuring they arrived on time.
Busch, leading a group of tourists in Gander for the anniversary, was aware of the town’s supportive history through Ohioan Shirley Brooks-Jones, who started the Lewisporte Area Flight 15 Scholarship Fund following her experience in Gander on 9/11.
Reflecting on the unexpected assistance from the American tourists, Connolly expressed gratitude for their generosity, emphasizing the timely help they provided.
The heartwarming gesture served as a reminder of the enduring friendship between Gander and those touched by its compassion during challenging times.
