On September 11, American pilot Nick Dobi was operating a Continental flight from Milan to New York when he had to make an emergency landing in Newfoundland due to the tragic events at the World Trade Center.
Upon receiving the order to ground his plane, Dobi had to choose between landing in Gander or Stephenville. He opted for Gander due to the favorable weather conditions there on that day. Reflecting on the experience at Gander’s 25th-anniversary 9/11 commemoration service, Dobi emphasized the importance of having contingency plans in aviation.
A total of 38 planes were diverted to Gander on September 11, 2001, with Dobi’s plane being the second last to arrive. The last plane, piloted by Guy Gullick, landed shortly after. Despite their close proximity on the tarmac, the two pilots did not meet until 25 years later at the commemorative event, where they shared a heartwarming embrace.
Recalling the events of that day, Gullick highlighted the extraordinary hospitality shown by the people of Newfoundland. When faced with a full airport in Gander, Gullick pleaded for a landing spot, and the residents welcomed his passengers with open arms, offering assistance and support.
