On rehearsal day for Nomad Stages’ production titled “When the World Stopped,” performers in Stephenville on Newfoundland and Labrador’s west coast gather at the Arts and Culture Centre to practice. Louann Davis, the artistic director and owner of Nomad Stages, oversees the session, noting down feedback.
The idea for the musical arose after the success of “Come from Away” in Gander, with residents feeling the need to share Stephenville’s unique 9/11 story on its 25th anniversary. The production includes skits portraying individuals impacted by the events of that day when planes were grounded, showcasing the emotional turmoil experienced.
Denise Ryan, a performer with Nomad Stages, shared her personal experience from working at a nursery school during 9/11. She recalled the confusion and impact on the community as planes landed unexpectedly at the local airport, later inspiring a scene in the play.
“When the World Stopped” is scheduled for performances on September 11 and 12 at the Stephenville Arts and Culture Centre, inviting the community to witness and reflect on their town’s role during 9/11. The production aims to instill a sense of pride in the audience for Stephenville’s contributions on that fateful day.
Stephenville Mayor Bob Byrnes emphasized the town’s enduring ties with America, particularly evident during times like 9/11. The town’s history as a key refueling stop for transatlantic flights and its strong American connections have shaped its response to significant events like 9/11.
In recalling the aftermath of 9/11, Mayor Byrnes highlighted the hospitality extended to stranded passengers, with locals providing support and accommodation. The community continues to honor the memory of those impacted by organizing special services, maintaining a close connection to the events of that tragic day.
