In a tragic incident in North Spirit Lake First Nation, located in northwestern Ontario, one person has been killed, and another individual is in police custody following a shooting. The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) responded to a disturbance call in the community after 5 p.m. CT on Friday.

A male suspect has been apprehended, and the police have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to safety. The community can anticipate an increased police presence as the investigation progresses. North Spirit Lake is a remote Oji-Cree community with about 430 residents, situated approximately 530 kilometers northwest of Thunder Bay and 170 kilometers north of Red Lake.

The chief and council of North Spirit Lake First Nation expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that the loss of life will profoundly impact both the families involved and the entire community. They confirmed that a serious event took place, resulting in the shooting of two community members, with one person in stable condition and the other tragically deceased.

The suspect, described as a stranger to the community, is being investigated in connection with the incident. The community leaders urged everyone to keep those affected, their families, and the entire North Spirit Lake First Nation community in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

This incident follows a recent shooting in Constance Lake First Nation on August 29, where community members were advised to remain indoors during the investigation. Constance Lake, an Ojibway and Cree community located about 490 kilometers northeast of Thunder Bay, has a population of just under 900 individuals.

Authorities revealed that the shooting in Constance Lake occurred at a residence, resulting in injuries to an adult male victim. Police swiftly contained the area and initiated an emergency response involving NAPS and OPP teams. The NAPS and OPP collaborated to manage the situation effectively.
