University of Waterloo doctoral candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah, though not a recipient of the prestigious Nobel Prize, proudly holds an Ig Nobel award. The Ig Nobels, a playful tribute to the Nobel Prizes, spotlight unconventional and creative research endeavors within academia. Thurairajah and his team clinched the Ig Nobel Physics Prize this year for their groundbreaking work on creating a urinal that prevents splashing.
Upon receiving the news from his supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, Thurairajah vividly recalls the celebratory moment. They celebrated with wine in espresso cups as they toasted to their success. Their innovative urinal designs, including the Nautilus and Cornocopia, were meticulously crafted and tested to minimize splashing and enhance ease of cleaning.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his team sported bright yellow raincoats, ready to bask in the recognition of their quirky scientific peers. Despite the unconventional nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasizes the practical implications of their work in improving public restroom facilities and overall societal well-being.
In addition to Thurairajah’s team, other Canadian researchers were also honored at the event. These included a team from the University of Toronto recognized for their study on unethical behavior related to upper-class individuals and a group from McGill University acknowledged for their innovative use of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing.
The Ig Nobel Prize ceremony, organized by the Annals of Improbable Research magazine, has shifted to Europe after decades in the U.S. due to visa concerns for attendees.
