Over the past two days, Javier has discovered numerous unclaimed bodies within a 300-meter radius near the local Marriott hotel, where a makeshift base camp has been established by a group of medical professionals and volunteers.
Javier, who also plays the French horn, recounted finding more than a dozen bodies in the area, remarking on the pervasive stench of decay that hangs over the city. The death toll from the consecutive 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes on Wednesday has climbed to 1,430 confirmed fatalities, with many more individuals sustaining injuries, according to Venezuelan officials.
The response efforts have largely been driven by the local community, with Vicente Villarroel, a former federal lawmaker, expressing concerns about the lack of organized government response and the reliance on civilian efforts for rescue operations.
