Calgary police have reported a tragic incident resulting in four fatalities following a collision on Stoney Trail late Sunday night. The authorities received a distress call to Stoney Trail just north of 90th Avenue S.W. at approximately 11 p.m.
According to police, a 30-year-old male was driving a southbound Mercedes-Benz in the incorrect lane, accompanied by a woman and child in the passenger seats, when the vehicle collided with a Subaru driven by a 43-year-old man. The impact led to both vehicles catching fire, with a 52-year-old woman in a Chevrolet Equinox subsequently colliding with the Mercedes-Benz.
Tragically, all occupants of the Mercedes-Benz were pronounced dead at the scene, along with the driver of the Subaru. The driver and three young passengers in the Chevrolet were taken to the hospital, with one individual sustaining life-altering yet non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency responders from the Calgary Fire Department arrived at the scene to find two of the three vehicles engulfed in flames. Firefighters promptly engaged in aggressive fire suppression techniques while conducting swift searches of the vehicles and providing emergency medical assistance.
Authorities are investigating impairment and excessive speed as potential contributing factors on the part of the Mercedes-Benz driver. The investigation is ongoing, and the road remained closed for several hours following the incident.
