The wildfire near Wrigley, N.W.T., advanced towards the community overnight, now sitting seven kilometers away. Evacuation of Wrigley residents commenced on June 29 due to a fire to the north. On Saturday, essential workers were also forced to evacuate as the fire breached protective lines, joining other evacuees in Fort Smith.
Jamie Moses, chief of the Pehdzéh Kı̨ First Nation in Wrigley, remains in the community expressing concerns about the fire’s proximity amidst hot and windy conditions. Evacuees have started arriving in Fort Smith after a long drive, with some taking a break in Hay River.
Firefighters dropped fire retardant and planned controlled ignitions for Monday to combat the fire. Meanwhile, frustrations grow in Fort Simpson, evacuated around the same time as Wrigley, as the fire there remains a threat.
The wildfire expanded on the eastern flank, with dry and hot conditions persisting. Although isolated showers were possible, strong north winds were expected to increase fire activity. Officials remain optimistic that the fire will not reach the community, implementing protective measures like creating fuel breaks.
Precautionary measures are being taken, including bringing in a high-volume suppression system from Alberta. Individual houses in the community already have sprinkler systems, with additional measures being put in place to safeguard against ember ignition.
Preparations are underway for potential further evacuations, including making arrangements for pets left behind in the community. The N.W.T. SPCA has appealed for donations to support the care of these animals. Fire crews are committed to staying until the situation is under control to protect the community.
