A man aged 32 from Grande Prairie, Alberta, is facing a variety of charges related to alleged sexual offenses reported this year. Joseph Kidd is confronted with over a dozen charges following investigations by the RCMP conducted between April and June 2026. The accusations involve four purported victims aged between 12 and 18 years old. Some of the incidents are said to have occurred while Kidd was conditionally released from custody.
According to Grande Prairie RCMP Superintendent Mark MacDougald, the series of events began when a 14-year-old girl from British Columbia reported a sexual assault at the local detachment on April 17. The victim claimed to have met Kidd through social media, after which he drove to B.C. to pick her up and brought her back to his residence in Grande Prairie. The girl managed to leave the house when Kidd went to work.
Kidd was subsequently charged with offenses including sexual assault, sexual interference, forcible confinement, assault while choking, and unsafe storage of a firearm. Following the investigation, he was released on certain conditions on April 30. However, less than two weeks later, police responded to a 911 call at Kidd’s residence, leading to his arrest and further charges involving an 18-year-old woman from Lloydminster.
The investigation revealed that Kidd had driven to Lloydminster to pick up the woman before returning to his residence in Grande Prairie. Allegedly, he assaulted the woman at his house when she refused to engage in sexual activities with him. Kidd faced charges of assault, sexual assault, assault while choking, and three counts of failing to comply with a release order. He was released again on June 1 with specific conditions and a $7,500 cash bail.
Additionally, a 15-year-old girl came forward to the Grande Prairie RCMP detachment on June 18, reporting that Kidd had been stalking her. The girl claimed that Kidd offered her alcohol to get into his vehicle and stated that she first encountered him on June 4, with subsequent incidents occurring until June 18.
Kidd was charged with criminal harassment, sexual interference, sexual assault, and failure to comply with release conditions based on the girl’s allegations. On the same day, a woman reported that an individual driving a yellow convertible had attempted to lure her 12-year-old daughter into the car. Police located Kidd in a vehicle matching the description near the scene, leading to charges of abduction of a person under 14 and failure to comply with release conditions. He was remanded into police custody and appeared in court on June 22, with his next court appearance scheduled for July 2.
Legal experts emphasized the importance of considering public safety and the presumption of innocence during bail decisions. Kathryn Quinlan, a criminal defense lawyer, highlighted that judges assess an accused individual’s likelihood to attend court, risk to public safety, and compliance with orders when deciding on bail. Quinlan noted that while cases like Kidd’s breach of release conditions are unusual, many individuals facing serious sexual offense charges are granted bail before trial.
Furthermore, the RCMP stated that while there is no concrete evidence of additional victims, they believe there may be others. Collaboration between the Grande Prairie RCMP and the Grande Prairie Police Service is ongoing to address the case. Superintendent MacDougald emphasized the importance of making information public to encourage potential victims to come forward if they have been hesitant in the past.
