Residents of Sheshatshiu are grieving the loss of Beatrice Penashue, who tragically lost her life this week, allegedly at the hands of her partner. Expressing deep sorrow, her sister Munik Aster described the devastation felt by the family, emphasizing the void left by Penashue’s absence and the underlying anger at the situation.
In a solemn tribute, more than 100 individuals marched through Sheshatshiu to honor Penashue, pausing at the location where the incident occurred, marked by a significant banner advocating for the cessation of alcohol and drug abuse. John Joseph Nuna, 29, faces a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Penashue.
Aster fondly remembered her sister as the youngest in the family, highlighting her gentle nature and love for her children. Penashue had faced challenges after being in a foster home in Ontario during her youth, resulting in a loss of her native language and a significant change in her demeanor.
Chief Eugene Hart of Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation expressed the community’s collective grief and the urgent need for additional resources to address substance abuse issues. Acknowledging the pain and suffering within the community, both Hart and Aster emphasized the necessity for healing and support in the aftermath of successive tragedies.
Organizing the memorial walk for Penashue, Warrick Milley recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing the assault that led to her death and the subsequent involvement of the police. Reflecting on the impact of substance abuse in the community, Milley stressed the importance of addressing these issues to prevent further tragedies.
On the day of Penashue’s tragic death, the provincial government declared gender-based violence an epidemic. The accused, Nuna, made a court appearance in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, facing charges of second-degree murder and assault. As the investigation unfolds, Sheshatshiu residents can expect heightened police presence to support the ongoing inquiry.
