Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her partner Luisa Stefani from Brazil have advanced to the semi-finals at the French Open. The fourth-seeded pair secured a straight-sets victory (6-4, 7-5) over the eleventh-seeded team of Vera Zvonareva from Russia and Laura Siegemund from Germany in Paris on Tuesday.
Dabrowski, representing Ottawa, and Stefani will now face the top-seeded duo of Katerina Siniakova from Czechia and Taylor Townsend from the United States for a chance to compete in the finals at Stade Roland Garros.
In another match, teenager Mirra Andreeva outplayed Sorana Cirstea with a 6-0, 6-3 victory, advancing to the semi-finals for the second time. The clash took place under the closed roof of Court Philippe-Chatrier due to rain after a week of scorching weather in Paris. Despite Cirstea’s experience, the 19-year-old Andreeva dominated the game, breaking Cirstea’s serve multiple times and comfortably securing the first set.
Although Cirstea managed to hold her serve and make a comeback in the second set, Andreeva’s powerful groundstrokes and strategic net play proved too much for her. Andreeva will now await the winner of the match between Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk for her next round.
Meanwhile, in the men’s category, Rafael Jodar from Spain fell to the second-seeded Alexander Zverev, while Jakub Mensik defeated Joao Fonseca to become the youngest Czech man to reach the semi-finals at a Grand Slam.
