“Cricket Canada Excluded from Blue Jays’ Cricket Day”

Cricket Canada has faced a setback with the loss of a significant partnership and a key platform for engaging new cricket fans, as confirmed by investigative reporting from the fifth estate. The Toronto Blue Jays announced via email that Cricket Canada will not be part of this year’s Cricket Day at the Park on May 23. However, the event will proceed as planned.

The annual Cricket Day at the Park, now in its fourth year, serves as a bridge between baseball and cricket enthusiasts, introducing cricket to a broader audience. This decision follows allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement, and match-fixing attempts within Cricket Canada, as revealed in a fifth estate investigation. The individuals implicated have denied the accusations.

Cricket Canada’s involvement in past events included national team players and officials participating in pre-game ceremonies at Toronto’s Rogers Centre. Notably, in 2024, Saad Bin Zafar, the then captain of Canada’s national men’s cricket team, threw the ceremonial first pitch. Last year, the first 15,000 fans received a special Blue Jays and Cricket Canada warm-up jacket upon arriving at the stadium.

In response to the situation, Cricket Canada stated that they have mutually agreed with the Blue Jays to limit their participation in this year’s event, ensuring the focus remains on the community and the overall experience. TD Bank, the event’s presenter and sponsor of both the Blue Jays and Cricket Canada, did not address inquiries about Cricket Canada’s role but expressed concerns about the organization’s governance and leadership.

The Blue Jays initiated Cricket Day at the Park in 2022 after consulting with Cricket Canada to better understand cricket fans in Toronto and Canada. The event aimed to engage South Asian and Caribbean audiences with cricket who may have had limited exposure to baseball.

Despite Cricket Canada’s absence this year, the Blue Jays are committed to fostering connections between baseball and cricket fans. The upcoming event will feature henna artists, Bhangra dancers, dhol drummers, and virtual reality cricket experiences. Additionally, the Blue Jays Baseball Academy will host a baseball-cricket clinic in collaboration with the Ontario Schools Cricket Association and other South Asian groups.

The focus remains on celebrating the synergy between baseball and cricket, as the Blue Jays continue efforts to unite fans of both sports.
