Albertans Skeptical of Alberta-BC Pipeline MOU

A recent survey conducted by Janet Brown Opinion Research for CBC News reveals that the majority of Albertans are skeptical about the potential success of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith. The MOU, aimed at advancing a new bitumen pipeline from Alberta to the B.C. coast, has left 57% of respondents feeling either not very confident or not at all confident about its ability to lead to a pipeline, while 37% are somewhat or very confident. The survey, which polled 1,200 Albertans, was conducted by Trend Research between April 7 and April 22, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.

Energy analysts note that the complexity of the MOU and the various conditions attached to the pipeline project raise doubts about its fruition. Deadlines have already been missed, with the next significant date being July 1 for Alberta to submit an application for the project to Ottawa. Past failed major projects, such as Northern Gateway, Energy East, and Keystone XL, have contributed to what is referred to as “battered pipeline optimism syndrome” by some experts.

Certain factors influence confidence in the pipeline project, including respondents’ views on political figures like Carney and ties to Canada. The survey also indicates approval of Smith’s efforts to reset the province’s relationship with the federal government, although there has been a slight dip in strong approval compared to previous years. The split in opinions aligns closely with political affiliations, with sentiments varying along political lines.

While developments like increased fuel prices and tightening oil supplies could bolster confidence in the project, skepticism remains prevalent among many Albertans. The survey findings highlight the nuanced views of residents regarding both the pipeline project and Smith’s political approach, indicating a complex landscape of opinions within the province.
