At his family retreat in Sommet Saint-Sauveur within the Laurentian Mountains near Montreal, Canadian moguls star Mikaël Kingsbury envisioned becoming an Olympic champion long before his numerous achievements. Growing up next to the ski hill, eight-year-old Kingsbury would tirelessly ski up and down the slope while staying connected with his mom via walkie-talkies for safety.

Kingsbury, now 33, is culminating his remarkable moguls career where it all began 25 years ago. Speaking to CBC Sports, the five-time Olympic medalist announced his retirement following the Canadian freestyle ski championships at Sommet Saint-Sauveur.

Reflecting on his decision, Kingsbury expressed readiness for his final competition, emphasizing the significance of finishing where he started his mogul skiing journey. His retirement choice has been on his mind since September, marking a full-circle moment from his first race to his last.

As the most decorated moguls skier in history, Kingsbury has achieved 100 World Cup wins and nine world championship titles. His recent Olympic success, including a silver and historic dual moguls gold, solidified his decision to retire on a high note after accomplishing his ultimate goal of winning the Olympics.

Apart from his sporting achievements, Kingsbury’s new role as a father to son Henrik has influenced his retirement decision. Embracing fatherhood, he looks forward to more quality time with his family while still engaging in his passion for skiing.

Acknowledging the crucial support of his family throughout his career, Kingsbury expressed gratitude for their unwavering backing. His journey, filled with triumphs and challenges, has been a collective effort, with his family playing a pivotal role in shaping his success.

With his retirement marking a significant milestone for his family, Kingsbury’s legacy as a Canadian sports icon will endure. Grateful for the support from his fellow Canadians, he cherishes the experiences representing his country on the global stage and remains proud to wear the maple leaf.
