Tyler Mislawchuk started his competitive season by clinching a bronze medal at a World Triathlon Cup held in Chengdu, China, over the weekend. This marked his seventh career World Cup medal at the age of 32, hailing from Oak Bluff, Manitoba.
As a three-time Olympian, Mislawchuk had previously triumphed at the Tokyo Olympic Test event in 2019 and secured a bronze medal in the World Triathlon Championship Series. Expressing his satisfaction, he stated, “You just never know when the next podium will be so I’m going to soak this one in. With six months of off-season, I’m pretty happy with the first hit of the year.”
Crossing the finish line in 50 minutes and 16 seconds, Mislawchuk secured his spot on the podium. Luke William from Australia claimed the gold in 50:14, with France’s Nils Serre Gehri trailing closely behind to earn the silver medal.
Among fellow Canadians, Liam Donnelly from Campbellville, Ontario, finished eighth, while Martin Sobey from Charlottetown placed 13th in the competition. In the women’s category, Isla Britton from Montreal achieved the 24th spot, and Sophia Howell from Airdrie, Alberta, finished in 37th place.
The women’s race was won by Germany’s Laura Lindemann, clocking in at 55:27, followed by neutral athlete Valentina Riasova in silver, and Kate Waugh from Great Britain securing the bronze.
Looking ahead, Mislawchuk, Sobey, Britton, and Howell are set to team up for the inaugural World Cup mixed relay event in Chengdu on Sunday.
