An Ontario Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) has made it clear that she has no intentions of switching parties, despite a recent effort by the Liberal Party to recruit her.
Kelly DeRidder, the MP for Kitchener Centre, revealed that she received a phone call from the Liberal Party, urging her to consider joining their ranks for a better chance at success in the upcoming election. However, DeRidder firmly declined the offer.
In an interview with CBC News and a subsequent Facebook video, DeRidder emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in government, expressing concerns about the erosion of trust in institutions.
The Liberals currently hold the majority of seats in the House of Commons, following a string of floor-crossings by Conservative MPs. Despite being approached by the Liberals, DeRidder stood her ground and refused to switch sides.
During the recruitment attempt, the Liberals highlighted DeRidder’s committee work and her interest in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital policy, suggesting a potential fit within their team. However, DeRidder remained steadfast in her decision to remain with the Conservative Party.
DeRidder disclosed that she was warned by the Liberals that it would be challenging for a Conservative candidate to win in her riding due to potential Green Party support for the Liberal candidate.
Green Party leader Mike Morrice confirmed that Green voters in Kitchener Centre would only support him as their MP. Morrice expressed his dedication to engaging with more constituents in preparation for the upcoming election.
DeRidder explained her decision to publicly share the recruitment attempt, citing the need to address the active recruitment of members from opposing parties. Political science professor Andrea Perrella noted the unusual nature of such public revelations but acknowledged the potential benefits for DeRidder in solidifying her reputation as a loyal Conservative.
Perrella highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong voter base, especially in a riding like Kitchener Centre known for its shifting political allegiances. DeRidder’s unwavering stance may bolster her support among Conservative voters in the upcoming election.
