Basketball sensation Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has made a significant investment in his hometown of Hamilton. The developer responsible for TD Coliseum, Oak View Group, disclosed the investment on Monday without revealing financial details. Gilgeous-Alexander, 27, is a key player for the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, the reigning champions.
In August, following his remarkable achievements in the NBA, including clinching the championship, being named both the finals MVP and regular-season MVP, and securing the league’s scoring title, Gilgeous-Alexander was handed the keys to Hamilton during a celebratory rally.
The investment is described as a commitment to Hamilton’s long-term economic and cultural development by Oak View Group. Gilgeous-Alexander expressed his personal connection to this endeavor, stating, “Becoming part of the ownership group at TD Coliseum is really personal for me. Growing up in Hamilton shaped who I am, so having the opportunity to help build something special in my hometown means everything.”
Aside from his passion for sports, Gilgeous-Alexander emphasized the significance of music in his life. He envisions the venue as a hub for artists to perform, offering world-class shows to fans and contributing to the local economy. Community events and programs are on the horizon at TD Coliseum in partnership with Gilgeous-Alexander’s charitable organization, the SGA Foundation.
As part of the collaboration, the Ares Atrium within the venue will be named in honor of Gilgeous-Alexander’s son, with plans for a mural in progress. Originally known as Copps Coliseum and later as FirstOntario Centre, the 18,000-seat TD Coliseum was renovated at a cost of $300 million before reopening in November. The reopening featured a Paul McCartney concert, marking the venue’s new chapter.
