Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed he had a conversation with his American counterpart early Tuesday regarding the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a project that Donald Trump had previously threatened to obstruct. Carney emphasized to the U.S. President that Canadian funds covered the entire construction cost of the Windsor-Detroit bridge, which was built with materials and labor from both Canada and the U.S., contrary to Trump’s erroneous assertions of minimal U.S. involvement.
Despite Trump’s claim that the U.S. government solely owns both sides of the bridge, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is jointly owned by Canada and Michigan, as outlined in the Canada-Michigan Crossing Agreement signed in 2012. Carney highlighted the collaborative effort between the two nations and expressed anticipation for the bridge’s future role in facilitating trade and travel between Canadians and Americans.
The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, a Canadian Crown corporation, will oversee the bridge’s operations, with governance by the International Authority comprising representatives from both Canada and Michigan. Carney underscored the significance of this cooperative venture as a positive example of bilateral relations between the countries.
Addressing concerns around the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), Carney also discussed the matter with Trump, raising the prospect of negotiations specific to the bridge. Trump’s trade representative, Jamieson Greer, indicated the U.S. desire for a share of toll revenues generated by the bridge, emphasizing the economic benefits it brings to both nations.
Furthermore, Greer mentioned the neighboring Ambassador Bridge, privately owned by the Moroun family, who have been vocal opponents of the new bridge project. Trump’s sudden threats to block the bridge followed a meeting between Matthew Moroun and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, prompting speculation about underlying motives.
Former Michigan governor Rick Snyder, who played a key role in the bridge agreement, refuted Trump’s claims and emphasized the bridge’s importance in enhancing economic growth and trade efficiency. Snyder criticized reliance on the aging Ambassador Bridge, advocating for the completion of the Gordie Howe International Bridge to address longstanding transportation challenges and foster economic development on both sides of the border.
