The Oshawa Generals issued an apology for requesting fans to shower before attending their home games. The incident sparked discussions on social media after season ticket holders received an email containing a hygiene reminder.
The email, sent by Jason Hickman, the team’s director of ticket sales and service, emphasized the importance of showering if individuals had engaged in activities causing body odor. Additionally, fans were encouraged to utilize hand-sanitizing stations, practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette, and maintain personal cleanliness while sharing space with others at the arena.
In response to the backlash, the team posted an apology on social media, acknowledging their overstep and expressing regret. Hickman mentioned receiving numerous complaints from fans regarding unpleasant odors from fellow attendees, noting a recent increase in such grievances.
One fan, known as Ashley, expressed mixed feelings about the email, finding humor in it but also highlighting how it reinforced negative stereotypes associated with Oshawa. She suggested that addressing odor issues in a more personalized manner would have been preferable to a mass email approach.
Another attendee, Kyle Bichener, recounted an experience at a game where he was distracted by a strong odor emanating from a nearby fan. Despite not raising the issue with staff, he recognized the team’s email as a measure to promote hygiene and ensure a pleasant environment for all attendees.
Overall, the Generals’ intention behind the hygiene reminder was to maintain a healthy and comfortable atmosphere within the arena, although it inadvertently stirred controversy among fans.
