When heavy rainfall occurs, the water rushing down these hills causes rapid river rises, contrasting the slower rise of rivers in flatter regions.

Experts like Jay Doering, a civil engineering professor, explained that quick floods from intense storms, combined with recurring storms, lead to severe damages. The unpredictability of these storms makes it challenging for meteorologists to foresee the exact impact on specific areas.

The unusual heavy precipitation in the Parkland region is attributed to climate change, as indicated by climatologists. The changing climate, with a more “wavy” jet stream, results in increased storm activity, particularly in areas with high moisture levels like Manitoba. This recent pattern of consecutive storms is a reflection of these climate shifts.

While the floodwaters in the Parkland area are receding, areas like the Assiniboine River basin are still at risk of flooding. The Assiniboine River is approaching record crest levels in various regions, prompting flood forecasters to remain vigilant. Measures like dikes in low-lying areas provide some protection, but the situation remains critical.

The diversion of excess river flows to protect areas like Lake Manitoba from breaching dikes near Winnipeg has been effective so far. Unlike the severe flooding experienced in 2011, the current operation of the diversion remains manageable. Lake Manitoba’s water levels are within the safe range, reducing the risk of widespread flooding downstream.

The economic impact of the recent flooding is expected to be significant, particularly for agricultural producers and affected businesses and homeowners. While the full cost is unknown, efforts are being made to provide necessary assistance. On a positive note, Manitoba Hydro stands to benefit financially from the increased water levels, potentially offsetting storm-related repair costs.
