Commuter rail service in Catalonia’s northeastern Spain was halted on Wednesday following a Barcelona commuter train accident that occurred the previous night, according to Spanish officials. The crash resulted in one fatality and 37 injuries as emergency teams worked overnight to assist those affected. The incident was caused by the train colliding with a retaining wall that collapsed onto the tracks.
This mishap in northeastern Spain took place during a period of national mourning following a separate fatal train collision in the country’s southern region that claimed the lives of at least 42 individuals on Sunday. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the earlier crash that left numerous others wounded.
The victim of the Barcelona-area crash was identified as a trainee train operator, as confirmed by regional authorities. Among the injured, five individuals were in critical condition, while six others sustained less severe injuries, according to emergency services.
The suspension of commuter train operations on Wednesday morning led to significant traffic congestion on roads leading into Barcelona. Regional authorities in Catalonia advised the public to minimize non-essential travel and encouraged companies to facilitate remote work during the service disruptions.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences for the incident in Barcelona, stating on Tuesday night, “All my affection and solidarity with the victims and their families.”
While Spain’s high-speed rail network functions efficiently, the commuter rail service has been plagued by reliability issues. However, incidents resulting in injuries or fatalities are uncommon in either service.
The commuter train crash occurred close to the town of Gelida, situated approximately 35 minutes from Barcelona. ADIF, Spain’s railway operator, attributed the collapse of the retaining wall to heavy rainfall in the northeastern region. As a result, commuter train services along the affected line were canceled.
In another tragic event, the nation continued to mourn the victims of a deadly train accident that transpired about 800 kilometers away on Sunday. One individual, Fidel Saez, shared his family’s harrowing experience during the ill-fated journey back from a musical outing in the capital, where his mother lost her life, but his children, brother, and nephew survived the ordeal.
Health authorities reported that 39 individuals remained hospitalized on Tuesday morning, with 83 others treated and discharged. Among the survivors was Emil Johnson, a Swedish national residing in Malaga, who was en route to Madrid for passport renewal when the accident occurred.
Despite the calamity, a remarkable story emerged of a six-year-old girl who miraculously survived the crash with minor injuries while tragically losing her parents, brother, and cousin. The mayor of their hometown hailed her survival as a miracle.
