Three students from Manitoba were airlifted to Winnipeg after a school bus accident left them injured. The incident occurred on Highway 10, just south of Mafeking, when the bus slid off the road due to icy conditions and rolled multiple times.
Drayah Maytwayashing, a 17-year-old student, described the terrifying moment when the bus veered off the road, causing her to wake up in a different seat covered in blood with a gash on her forehead. Along with her brother, Drayden Genaille, and cousin, Michelle Chartrand, all from Sapotaweyak Cree Nation, they were among the 15 people on the bus.
Maytwayashing sustained a head gash and two fractured pelvises, while Genaille was discharged from the hospital the same night. Chartrand and Maytwayashing were released the following day. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening.
The crash prompted a discussion on school bus safety measures, including the possibility of installing seat belts on buses. Tracey Campeau, the grandmother of Maytwayashing and Genaille, expressed her support for mandatory seat belts on school buses in Manitoba. She emphasized the importance of safety, especially after witnessing the aftermath of the accident.
Despite the traumatic experience, the students are determined to recover and continue their education. The community is rallying around them, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with authorities interviewing witnesses to determine any potential charges.
