“Chamber of Commerce Leaders Support SCOTUS Tariff Ruling”

Chamber of Commerce leaders in Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit have expressed their support for the recent Supreme Court ruling on Friday, which declared that U.S. President Donald Trump had overstepped his authority by imposing global tariffs using emergency powers. Trump had touted these tariffs as a central aspect of his economic strategy, claiming that they would lead to the relocation of factories back to the U.S. and create new jobs. However, the Supreme Court’s 6–3 decision clarified that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 does not grant the president the power to set tariff rates.

The ruling also invalidated the broader tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, including reciprocal and fentanyl-related tariffs. Ryan Donally, the president and CEO of the Windsor Essex Chamber of Commerce, described the decision as a win, emphasizing the importance of upholding rules-based economic policies, especially with a majority Republican Supreme Court.

Donally also highlighted the positive impact of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) in mitigating the effects of tariffs over the past 10 months. Despite this victory, tariffs imposed on steel, aluminum, and lumber under a separate law continue to affect businesses in Windsor.

Glenn Stevens Jr., the Innovation Officer at the Detroit Regional Chamber, expected the Supreme Court ruling and emphasized the need for stability and certainty in the auto industry, which has been disrupted by the ongoing tariff situation. He expressed hope for a renewed and strengthened USMCA trade agreement with Canada and Mexico to alleviate the challenges faced by businesses in the Detroit area.

Following the Supreme Court ruling, President Trump criticized the decision, accusing certain justices of being influenced by foreign interests. He pledged to implement a new 10% global tariff, raising concerns about its potential impact on Canada and the exemptions under CUSMA.

Overall, the business community in Windsor and Detroit continues to navigate the uncertainties and challenges posed by the tariff landscape, seeking stability and clarity in trade relations moving forward.
