Don Bourassa has expressed feeling bullied by the impact of a proposed wind farm in southeast Saskatchewan near his home, stating that it has strained relationships within his community. Living in the Rural Municipality of Weyburn, Bourassa revealed that a neighbor had approached him about purchasing his property to silence his opposition to Enbridge’s Seven Stars Energy Project.
The planned 200-megawatt facility by Enbridge near Weyburn, Saskatchewan, aims to be operational by late 2027, featuring 46 turbines capable of powering approximately 100,000 households. Bourassa, residing just eight kilometers from the site, highlighted the division among residents who either benefit financially from the project or oppose it due to concerns about its impact on private properties.
Residents have actively voiced their opposition to the wind farm at town hall meetings, citing potential negative effects on their livelihoods and the environment. Kim Brady, another resident, emphasized that the project has generated conflict among neighbors and family members, leading to persistent tensions in the community.
While Weyburn has approved the project, the Rural Municipality of Griffin has not yet made a decision, citing the need for additional information on the project’s environmental implications. Both municipalities have refrained from commenting further on the matter.
Enbridge has reiterated its commitment to addressing concerns raised by residents, including potential noise pollution, wildlife impact, and property devaluation. The company has assured measures to mitigate these issues, such as relocating turbines away from residences and implementing lighting systems for aircraft safety at night.
The provincial government has shown support for the wind farm, providing a $100-million loan guarantee through the Saskatchewan Indigenous Investment Finance Corporation to enhance Indigenous participation in the project. Local authorities, including the City of Weyburn, also back the initiative, anticipating economic benefits and job creation in the region.
Overall, the proposed wind farm project in Weyburn has sparked a contentious debate among residents, with differing opinions on its potential benefits and drawbacks. As discussions continue, the community remains divided on the long-term implications of the initiative.
