Elana Woldenberg Ruffman, the Marketing Vice President at Learning Resources, expressed her lack of concern regarding President Trump’s derogatory remarks towards her and other plaintiffs who successfully challenged his global tariffs in the landmark case of Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump. The Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling deemed Trump’s unilateral tariff imposition under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act illegal without congressional approval.

President Trump criticized the decision as “unpatriotic” and accused the Supreme Court judges of disloyalty, labeling the plaintiffs as “sleazebags.” Ruffman, in an interview with As It Happens, shared her gratification at the court’s agreement with their arguments, emphasizing the significance of upholding taxation principles dating back to James Madison and the Boston Tea Party.

Despite Trump’s intention to impose new tariffs via executive order, Ruffman remains focused on protecting her company’s employees and investing in the community rather than engaging in political disputes. The company awaits clarity on potential tariff refunds following the Supreme Court’s decision.

The case’s impact on global trade policy and the resilience of an independent family business like Learning Resources in safeguarding its operations and workforce underscore the far-reaching implications of legal battles against unjust tariffs.
