“Iran-US Nuclear Talks Advance: Oil Futures Drop”

Iran and the United States have made progress in their ongoing nuclear dispute discussions, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi stating that they have agreed on essential “guiding principles.” However, Aragchi clarified that this does not indicate an immediate resolution. Following Aragchi’s comments, oil futures dropped, including a more than one percent decline in the Brent crude contract. These statements helped alleviate concerns of conflict in the region, particularly with the U.S. deploying a battle force to pressure Tehran for concessions.

Aragchi mentioned that various ideas were deliberated during the talks, leading to a general agreement on some fundamental principles. Meanwhile, a U.S. official mentioned that Iran is expected to present detailed proposals within the next two weeks to address gaps in the nuclear negotiations. Despite the progress made, the official emphasized that there are numerous details still requiring discussion.

The indirect discussions, involving U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, alongside Aragchi, were facilitated by Oman. Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi highlighted that while there is much work ahead, both Iran and the U.S. have identified clear next steps.

In a separate development, Iranian state media reported that Iran intended to temporarily close a portion of the vital global oil supply route, the Strait of Hormuz, due to security concerns as Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards conducted military exercises in the area. This action, a response to potential threats, could impact global oil flows significantly.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei of Iran responded to U.S. President Trump’s remarks about potential regime change in Iran, warning that any such attempts would fail. Khamenei emphasized that even the strongest military forces could face significant challenges, underscoring Iran’s resilience.

Araghchi expressed optimism about the talks, describing a “new window of opportunity” that could lead to a sustainable solution recognizing Iran’s legitimate rights. President Trump indicated indirect involvement in the discussions, suggesting Iran’s willingness to negotiate a deal. However, tensions have escalated in the past, with the U.S. and Israel conducting airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, reflecting mutual concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
