Americans are gearing up to mark 250 years of independence with a festive celebration in Washington D.C., featuring a lineup of ’90s music stars at the Freedom 250’s Great American State Fair. Attendees will groove to Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” and dance to C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” on June 26 at the I Love the 90’s! concert. However, rapper Young MC has backed out of the event, citing concerns over its alleged political affiliations.
In a Facebook post, Young MC expressed disappointment, stating that the artists were unaware of any political ties to the event. Despite organizers claiming a non-partisan stance, the celebration has been labeled as Trump-backed by some, leading to controversy. Milli Vanilli also clarified that they will not be performing, contradicting earlier reports.
Freedom 250, emphasizing the celebration of the American spirit, has faced criticism for glorifying President Donald Trump in conjunction with the country’s 250th birthday. Various initiatives, including featuring Trump on coins and passports, have drawn backlash. Notably, a UFC event at the White House on Trump’s birthday has stirred attention.
The event will showcase other musical acts from June 25 to July 10, although lineup changes have raised uncertainty. Morris Day and other artists like Martina McBride, the Commodores, and Bret Michaels have withdrawn from their performances, citing evolving circumstances and concerns over the event’s divisive nature.
Despite the setbacks, the celebration is expected to proceed with a mix of nostalgia and controversy surrounding its political undertones.
