Wildfire season has commenced in Alberta, raising concerns among residents about potential evacuations. Over the past decade, Alberta has witnessed significant evacuations due to wildfires, such as the incidents in Fort McMurray in 2016 and Jasper in 2024. Melanie Galea, who experienced the Horse River Fire evacuation in Fort McMurray, admitted feeling unprepared at the time due to the stress-induced lapse in logical thinking.
Galea’s packing choices during the evacuation reflected her state of mind, including essentials like her winter gear and a bulk purchase of cheese, while overlooking sentimental items like Christmas ornaments and photos. Since then, Galea has made it a priority to prepare for wildfire season annually, staying informed and ready with a go-bag for herself and her two cats in case of emergencies.
Emergency experts recommend preparing a go-bag for such situations. Alberta has seen multiple evacuations over the years, with statistics from the Alberta Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services indicating significant evacuations in recent years. Julie MacEachern, a community emergency management plans advisor, highlighted the common mistake of assuming ample time for packing during evacuations.
Research from the Government of Alberta in 2025 revealed that a considerable portion of Albertans felt unprepared for emergencies. To enhance preparedness, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo offers guidance on emergency preparedness, emphasizing the importance of essentials in a go-bag tailored to individual needs.
Efforts to safeguard homes include creating a content inventory through video documentation, practicing fuel-reduction measures, and ensuring adequate insurance coverage. Stephen Lacroix, managing director for the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, stressed the importance of comprehensive emergency plans beyond wildfires, recommending familiarity with emergency preparedness resources and family reunification strategies.
Being well-prepared significantly reduces stress levels during emergencies, underscoring the importance of proactive readiness for various natural disaster scenarios.
