Prime Minister Mark Carney lauded the Artemis II astronauts during their visit to Ottawa, emphasizing the mission’s inspirational impact on the nation. Carney expressed gratitude for the astronauts’ demonstration of teamwork, dedication, courage, and human ingenuity, underscoring that this mission marks just the beginning of greater achievements.
The Artemis II crew, including Canadian astronauts Jeremy Hansen and backup Jenni Gibbons, along with NASA astronauts commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and mission specialist Christina Koch, are touring Ottawa and Montreal from Wednesday to Friday to share insights from their mission.
The astronauts are engaging in public events, interacting with students, connecting with stakeholders in the Canadian space sector, and granting a limited number of interviews while in Canada. The Artemis II mission, which involved a journey around the moon and back, set a new record for human travel distance from Earth, positioning NASA for future crewed missions to Mars.
Despite the inherent risks, Carney highlighted the mission’s potential for paving the way for larger opportunities. Hansen expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome in Ottawa after their space voyage, emphasizing Canada’s capabilities on the global stage and the significance of Artemis II as a stepping stone toward future endeavors.
During a public event at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the crew engaged in discussions about humanity’s lunar exploration decisions and interacted with children, emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation within the crew and in international relationships, such as between Canada and the United States.
Carney reciprocated by presenting Hansen with the Canadian flag that flew over Parliament’s Peace Tower on the day of the crew’s return. The crew later shared their mission experiences at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., in the presence of parliamentarians and other stakeholders.
Overall, the Artemis II mission has not only showcased remarkable achievements in space exploration but also highlighted the collaborative spirit and aspirations for future space endeavors.
