“Tim Hortons Pledges 10,000 Local Hires Amidst Shift”

Share

Tim Hortons has committed to employing around 10,000 local workers, reducing its dependence on the temporary foreign worker program. The company has already conducted 400 hiring events in March and April, with plans to continue hiring local team members throughout the year.

Historically, Tim Hortons has utilized the temporary foreign worker program to address labor shortages, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Nevertheless, the company maintains a dedication to hiring individuals from the communities where its restaurants are situated.

According to Tim Hortons, only 3.6% of its restaurant workforce, which amounts to 4,000 employees, is currently employed through the temporary foreign worker program. These employees are recruited in areas with documented labor shortages.

Recent changes in regulations have allowed businesses to increase their reliance on temporary foreign workers to up to 20% of their workforce, with certain sectors permitted to reach 30%. Despite past criticisms from Conservative and NDP politicians regarding its use of temporary foreign labor, Tim Hortons has advocated for the program’s continuation to address staffing shortages.

In response to the rising youth unemployment rate, Tim Hortons has ceased lobbying efforts related to immigration policies. The company’s focus now shifts towards its commitment to hiring local workers and investing in Canadian communities.

Noteworthy transformations are underway at Tim Hortons, including plans to open 80 new restaurants and renovate 400 existing cafes across Canada by the end of the year. Ontario will see the most new locations, followed by Alberta and Quebec.

These initiatives coincide with the re-entry of Dunkin’ into the Canadian market, facilitated by Montreal-based Foodtastic. The return of Dunkin’ has prompted speculation about a potential competitive threat to Tim Hortons, which is known for its strong Canadian presence and community ties.

While Tim Hortons has maintained its relevance through collaborations with Canadian icons like Justin Bieber and Ryan Reynolds, industry experts suggest that emphasizing its Canadian roots and community investments could help the chain differentiate itself from Dunkin’ and resonate with Canadian consumers.

The commitment to supporting local communities and addressing youth unemployment may enhance Tim Hortons’ appeal among Canadians, positioning it favorably amidst the competitive landscape of the coffee industry.
