James Van Der Beek, the actor famous for his role in the 1990s television series “Dawson’s Creek,” has passed away at the age of 48. The news of his death was confirmed by his publicist in an email to CBC News.

In November 2024, Van Der Beek revealed that he had been diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer. He had been sharing his journey with cancer and insights into his family life on Instagram since then. A statement posted on his official Instagram account announced his passing earlier on the same day.

Describing his final days as courageous and graceful, a statement from Van Der Beek’s family shared on Instagram expressed the intention to reveal more about his wishes, his love for humanity, and the value of time in the future. The family requested privacy as they mourned the loss of their beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend.

Although he ventured into film and television beyond his famous role in “Dawson’s Creek,” where he played the character Dawson Leery, James Van Der Beek remained closely associated with the show that aired from 1998 to 2003. The series focused on a group of high school friends navigating love, friendships, and life challenges.

Van Der Beek’s career included roles in movies like “Varsity Blues” and the TV series “CSI: Cyber,” where he portrayed FBI special agent Elijah Mundo. Despite his diverse roles, he continued to be recognized for his portrayal of Dawson Leery in “Dawson’s Creek.”

The show, known for its articulate dialogue and candid discussions about relationships and sexuality, propelled Van Der Beek and his co-stars Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes, and Michelle Williams to stardom.
