“Lithium Battery Fires Prompt Bans and Safety Concerns”

Share

Firefighters are expressing concerns over the risks posed by lithium battery fires, particularly in e-bikes stored in homes, as well as incidents involving huge storage batteries at a solar farm in P.E.I. These incidents have prompted bans on electric bikes and cars in various settings, impacting public transit and ferry services. Consequently, some individuals are becoming cautious about adopting electric vehicles. This week marks Fire Prevention Week, with a focus on lithium batteries and the challenges they present in terms of fire safety and prevention.

Canadian fire departments face challenges in tracking lithium battery fires consistently. A survey by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs estimates that 1,500 fires were caused by lithium batteries across 600 communities in Canada last year. The incidents are on the rise alongside the increasing use of lithium battery-powered devices, with e-bikes and e-scooters being the most common culprits.

While fires involving electric vehicles and energy storage batteries are less frequent due to rigorous testing and safety features, incidents still occur. Lithium battery fires can result from wear and tear, damage, or overheating due to improper charging practices. These fires burn hotter and faster than conventional fires, leading to challenges in extinguishing them effectively.

Addressing the risks associated with lithium battery fires involves purchasing certified batteries, charging devices correctly, and ensuring proper recycling practices. Safety measures such as charging devices on hard surfaces, using the correct charger, and recycling batteries at designated drop-off sites are crucial steps in preventing potential fire hazards. Additionally, damaged batteries should be handled with care to avoid further risks.

In the event of a lithium battery fire, experts suggest that allowing the fire to burn out may be the most effective approach. Firefighters face challenges in handling such incidents due to the unique characteristics of lithium battery fires, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and proper training to mitigate risks effectively.
