“New Tool Predicts Fossil Fuel Projects’ Climate Impact”

Share

Australian scientists have developed a groundbreaking online tool to assess the environmental impact of fossil fuel projects on the climate. This tool, known as the Carbon Impacts Tracer, can predict the effects of proposed energy developments on global warming, glacier melting, and human fatalities. The tool calculates the carbon dioxide emissions of a project and uses scientific research to determine its real-world consequences, such as coral reef depletion, food production decline, and job losses.

The Carbon Impacts Tracer was recently launched with case studies on various projects, including the Bay du Nord offshore oil project in Canada. The Bay du Nord project, led by Equinor, is projected to release 188 megatonnes of CO2 over 20 years, resulting in a minimal temperature increase globally. The tool also forecasts increased heat exposure for over 111,000 individuals, 25 heat-related deaths in Europe, glacier loss, sea level rise, job losses, and poverty.

Although Equinor has not responded to requests for comments, experts like climatologist Joel Finnis emphasize the tool’s value in illustrating the severe environmental implications of projects like Bay du Nord. Maria Nawaz, from the University of New South Wales, highlights the tool’s ability to connect fossil fuel projects with their tangible impacts, challenging the notion that individual projects have insignificant emissions.

Nawaz believes that the Carbon Impacts Tracer could inform government decisions, regulatory processes, and public discourse on new energy projects, potentially influencing climate litigation efforts. Insurers and economists may also use the tool to evaluate project risks and economic consequences.

The tool currently focuses on proposed developments, with plans to incorporate more projects as data becomes accessible. The Carbon Impacts Tracer aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the fossil fuel sector, offering a comprehensive assessment of the climate repercussions of energy projects.
