“AI Data Centers in Alberta Pose Electricity Cost Concern”

A notable concern is the potential impact of artificial intelligence data centers on electricity consumption and subsequent energy costs for consumers in Alberta. A recent report from the Pembina Institute suggests that the Meta Data Centre planned for Sturgeon County, Alta., could lead to an increase of $270 to $460 per year in household power bills once operational.

These data centers, crucial for storing and distributing information for AI applications, are significant electricity consumers. In the U.S., data centers accounted for 4.4% of electricity demand in 2023, with estimates projecting this share to rise to 12% by 2028. Meta Platforms Inc., the company behind Facebook and Instagram, is set to construct a $13 billion data center complex in the region, scheduled to be operational within the next two to three years.

The data center will be linked to the Greenlight Electricity Centre, a $4.6 billion power plant generating 932 megawatts initially, with potential to double capacity. Despite assurances from the provincial government and Meta that the data center will not escalate electricity costs for Albertans, experts warn of potential price pressures due to the gap between the data center’s launch and the completion of its associated power plant.

According to the Pembina report, electricity prices could be most affected in the period prior to the Greenlight plant’s operation, expected between 2027 and 2031. Experts emphasize that the data center’s substantial electricity demand could strain the grid, potentially leading to increased wholesale electricity prices for consumers.

The report highlights the importance of timely infrastructure development and the integration of renewable energy sources to mitigate potential price hikes. It also notes the cumulative impact of multiple data centers being established in Alberta, suggesting a long-term trend of increased energy costs. However, Meta and the Alberta government maintain their commitment to responsible energy practices and cost management for consumers.
