On the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Americans, Canadians, and others are commemorating the tragic events that unfolded when a group of al-Qaeda militants hijacked four airplanes. The planes were deliberately crashed into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon, and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, resulting in the deaths of nearly 3,000 individuals, including 24 Canadians.
In New York, individuals gathered to pay their respects at the 9/11 Memorial ceremony. A poignant moment was captured as a person placed their hand on a picture of Father Mychal Judge, a New York City Fire Department chaplain, near the reflecting pools. Emotions ran high as families, like Heidi Peters and her daughter Hazel Reeves, honored their lost loved ones at the memorial site. Meanwhile, in Virginia, a ceremony took place at the Pentagon in Arlington to remember the 184 people who perished on American Airlines Flight 77 and inside the Pentagon. Military members and attendees paid their respects, reflecting on the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful day.
In Pennsylvania, visitors gathered for a memorial service honoring the passengers and crew members of United Airlines Flight 93, whose heroic actions thwarted the hijackers’ plans. The memorial in Shanksville paid tribute to the 40 individuals who lost their lives in the crash.
In Canada, Gander, Newfoundland, played a significant role in the aftermath of the attacks, with thousands expected to attend a ceremony in memory of the victims. U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra interacted with residents at the Gander International Airport, where he and his wife posed in front of a handmade quilt symbolizing the unity and compassion shown by the community during those trying times.
