A significant weather occurrence in Saskatchewan on Thursday featured thunderstorms, dust storms, and wind gusts peaking at 115 km/h. The powerful winds led to debris causing damage to trees and structures, resulting in power outages that persisted into Friday morning.
Environment Canada meteorologist Danielle Desjardins likened the wind speeds to EF0 tornado-level winds, emphasizing the severity of the event. Crews were impeded by the high winds in their efforts to repair power lines, leaving several communities without electricity for extended periods.
Radville, located approximately 130 km south of Regina, experienced the strongest winds in the province, with gusts hitting 115 km/h. Nine other communities, including Climax, Milestone, Coronach, Swift Current, Estevan, Yellow Grass, Val Marie, and Shaunavon, also recorded winds exceeding 100 km/h.
Radville town councillor Scott Biss reported damage in the town and surrounding areas, including downed trees and lost shingles on houses without significant injuries. The town faced visibility issues due to dust stirred up by the winds, with some areas remaining without power even on Friday.
The Happy Little Hooves Pony and Donkey Sanctuary near Estevan suffered structural damage when high winds dislodged roof sheeting from one of their shelters. The sanctuary, home to animals with health issues, particularly an asthmatic donkey, faced challenges due to the dusty conditions affecting their respiratory health.
Various individuals and businesses, such as Elle’s Cafe in Regina, also experienced damages, including fallen trees and power outages. Despite the disruptions, affected parties remained resilient, looking forward to repairs and support from the community.
Looking ahead, precipitation is expected to ease, but the long weekend forecast indicates continued unsettled weather, particularly in the northwest and central regions. Strong winds will persist in the south on Friday, calming by the evening, with further precipitation anticipated later in the weekend for southeastern Saskatchewan.
