Twyla Shannahan expresses regret over the separation from her late husband’s ashes during a journey from Alberta to Newfoundland. The Alberta widow is demanding an inquiry following Air Canada’s temporary misplacement of her husband’s cremated remains. Shannahan emphasized the significance of her husband’s ashes, stating that he deserved better treatment. After her husband’s passing in February, she aimed to scatter his ashes in the ocean and transport them to his hometown in Newfoundland.
Despite having all necessary paperwork and confirming with Air Canada in advance, Shannahan was instructed to place the ashes in a checked bag at Edmonton International Airport due to purported “new regulations.” Upon arriving in St. John’s, she discovered that the bag containing the ashes was missing, causing her immense distress. The remains were eventually located in Montreal and returned to her after much anticipation.
Shannahan voiced her dissatisfaction with the situation, highlighting the need for improved procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Both the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) and Air Canada acknowledged the sensitivity of the matter and assured compliance with regulations while treating passengers with respect. Despite scattering her husband’s ashes as planned, Shannahan continues to seek accountability and proper compensation from the airline to address the mishap and prevent its recurrence.
