Welsh musician Bronwen Lewis, who began performing Dolly Parton’s songs in Welsh a couple of years ago, has achieved a milestone by collaborating on a song with the iconic country singer herself.

Lewis garnered attention after sharing her rendition of “Jolene,” which captured the interest of Parton’s niece, Jada Star, leading to a collaboration with the country music legend. The new Welsh version of “Jolene,” featuring vocals in both Welsh and English by Parton, was recently released on major streaming platforms. It marks Parton’s second posthumous song release and was among her final recordings before her passing at 80.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Star emphasized the significance of the project and hoped that listeners would embrace it as much as they did. Lewis, a lifelong fan of country music and Parton, highlighted the emotional impact of hearing Parton’s vocals in both languages, evoking immediate tears from her and many others upon the track’s release.

Parton, who is believed to have Welsh heritage on her maternal side, swiftly agreed to join the collaboration, showing her support for the project. Star praised Lewis for her unique interpretation of “Jolene,” which resonated deeply with Parton and her family, leading to the collaboration.

The Welsh language, with a rich history predating the Roman Empire, has endured efforts to suppress it over the centuries. Today, about 17.8% of the Welsh population speaks the language, reflecting its cultural significance. Lewis expressed pride in their language and culture, emphasizing the universal themes of heartbreak and unity showcased in their collaboration with Parton, aiming to bridge cultural divides through music.
