“Vehicle Crashes into Buildings Spike in London, Ontario”

Drivers in London, Ontario, are causing concern as vehicle crashes into buildings have reached alarming levels. Bill Van Beers, a resident on Adelaide Street, has witnessed numerous cars speeding past his home, with over 50 buildings being struck by vehicles in 2025, a figure deemed shocking by safety advocates.

According to Angelo DiCicco of the Ontario Safety League, the number of incidents is unprecedented, considering that 47 vehicles collided with buildings in 2023 and 2024 each. The data, obtained through a freedom-of-information request to London police, illustrates a concerning trend, with an average of five cars crashing into buildings every month in London.

DiCicco highlighted that these accidents often stem from simple errors, leading to preventable deaths and injuries. Following a recent incident outside Van Beers’s home that left his front porch destroyed, where the driver was charged with impaired driving, Van Beers emphasized the ongoing issue of speeding and distracted driving in the area.

London police Acting Sgt. Greg Pearson acknowledged that reasons for these crashes vary, including impaired driving, navigation errors, and pedal confusion. Pearson stressed the importance of reducing these incidents, especially as they pose risks to pedestrians and building occupants.

Pedal confusion, often a result of distraction and lack of experience, has been a recurring issue. DiCicco suggested that regular retesting for professional drivers and self-assessment for others could enhance road safety. He emphasized the need to combat distractions, which he identified as the primary cause of accidents.

Similar concerns have been reported in Waterloo Region, where 67 vehicles crashed into buildings in 2025, indicating a growing trend that demands attention and proactive measures to ensure road safety.
